Workers' Compensation Insurance
Workers' Compensation insurance (now officially Employees' Compensation under the amended Act) is a statutory obligation for Indian employers under the Employees' Compensation Act, 1923. The policy indemnifies employers against legal liability to pay compensation for death, permanent total or partial disability, and temporary disability of workers arising out of and in the course of employment. India's large manufacturing, construction, and mining workforce -- often operating in hazardous conditions -- makes this a critical commercial insurance line. The Act prescribes minimum compensation amounts linked to the employee's monthly wages and age, with courts frequently awarding amounts exceeding statutory minimums. Common extensions include coverage for occupational diseases listed in Schedule III of the Act and medical expenses incurred by the employer.
